Government Degree College Banihal was established in Dec. 2007 under the Prime Minister’s Reconstruction Plan (PMRP) and started its functioning from a make-shift building of Govt. Higher Secondary School (Boys) Banihal from May 6, 2008 with Arts stream. The college lies in winter zone and is permanently affiliated with University of Jammu. The college is offering under graduate course (B. Sc.) in Science with subject like Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Mathematics. It also offers in Bachelor’s Degree in Arts (B.A.), with subjects like English, Political-Science, Education, History, Urdu, Sociology, Economics, Arabic and Environment Sciences. The college started functioning in 2008 with 150 Students including 88 Girl Students. The strength of college has been increasing steadily. The college has been recognized by UGC under section 2(F) and 12(B) of UGC Act 1956. Moreover, science stream has been introduced from the academic session 2021-2022 with a sanctioned intake capacity of 80 students.
The college is now functioning from its own building located at Bankoot, Banihal. The said building possesses well equipped IT enabled classrooms, library with qualitative books, reading room, browsing centre and science subject laboratories laced with all necessary equipments. Administrative building is in final stage of completion and will be handed over to college very soon.
